Old-film?

I then came across the option 'Old Film' and clicked on it. I have always loved things that look a little bit old fashioned, and so the real reason why I tried this effect on was because I wanted to see what it would look like for my own entertainment. However, I justified this decision with the costume of the scary girl. I made an effort to find a costume which made her look old fashioned, and this effect would nicely coincide with that.

I then saw the option 'flicker' and thought back to my trailer at the beginning where the transition is a little rough, and I put a black screen in the middle in order to create a flickery effect. I tried this effect on that bit and ended up absolutely loving it.

I then tried it on all the bits that were supposed to be darkened, including the close up shot of the scary girl.

This made me love the effect even more, but there was still one issue. It wouldn't sit right if only the dark bits looked sort of old fashioned, and the light bits looked modern, would it? Both thr dark and light parts of the film are set in the same time, therefore they both have to look as though they are from the same time. I referred back to the option list where I got the 'flicker' effect from and browsed for a lighter option.

There were then two to pick from: 'home film' and 'faded'. I quickly tried both of them on one scene to decide which I preferred.

'Home Film'

'Faded'

Both

It was instantly quite clear that both of the effects on looked ridiculously bad quality and was irritating to watch. However, 'home film' was brilliant and showed the contrast between the dark and light scenes quite clearly. The 'faded' effect was equally as cool, adding to the mysterious, creepy and dark tone of the movie. However, because I feel like the 'home film' effect added to the creepy tone and showed the contrast whereas the faded one simply added to the tone, I chose the 'home film' option. The contrast in the light and dark also symbolizes the contrast between the two main characters.
